Yes. You read that right. Greece has fallen...or at least the camp that has catered to Greek demigods for over three millennia has fallen. Camp Half-Blood had a traitor in their midst. A traitor with powerful allies who quickly burned the camp to the ground. Some were lost, some killed, and the rest who remained began the long trek across the country to the only place where they might be safe: Camp Jupiter.
Chiron banded what campers they had left, told them of the other camp and sent word to Camp Jupiter pleading for shelter. Chaos now threatens the camp daily with the arrival of new Greek campers to this foreign camp. This camp with strange customs and rules. While on the Roman end the Praetors are forced to hold up a balancing act of providing sanctuary while also trying to find the traitor before their home suffers the same fate as Camp Half-Blood.
New alliances are forged, new enemies are made, and these two worlds have to find some way to work together for the future of them all. Which side are you on? Which position will you take? It's time to jump in the fray because Greece has fallen.

She wasn't wearing a purple Camp Jupiter shirt, but Dani didn't care. She didn't really know if she was supposed to now, but she wouldn't have anyway. She hardly wore the orange Camp Half Blood in the first place - orange wasn't the best colour on her, and so the daughter of Dionysus had just never bothered. Dani liked to think she wasn't as vain or vapid or fashion-conscious as the daughters of Aphrodite, but the girl still knew what looked good on her, and an orange one-size-fits-all camp shirt wasn't high on that list. No, she was wearing one of her sundresses - not the best thing to be wearing when out in the little wooded area near Camp Jupiter, but she needed to get away. The madness - her constant companion, her fiercest defender and attacker, her best friend and worst enemy - had woken with a vengeance and was currently undulating behind her eyes.
The cold water of the little river served to distract her a little as she dipped her fingers into its path. Wisps of her long blonde hair had come undone from its loose ponytail at the base of her neck, and she probably looked a bit crazy, but Dani didn't particularly care. She was finally alone; she didn't need to guard herself so completely to keep the madness locked under her skin. When it was as active like it was today, it tended to seep more strongly through her pores like some sort of noxious disease, and while Dani usually didn't care how her powers affected others, today was different. The very air had felt flammable, as though the smallest friction could cause an explosion, and Dani opted to escape, to turn her back on her new life, because she'd had just about enough of demigods - both Roman and Greek.
Her pale bare arm straightened as she buried more of her hand into the water as though her fingers were caressing the hair of a lover. There was no expression on her face as she watched the ripples in the water, her mind on nothing and everything, her cornflower-blue eyes almost glazed over as she lost herself to the coolness of the water. That was, until she heard a snap of something behind her. Instantly, Dani was on high alert as she whipped around, even as she kept her hand in the water. Maybe whoever or whatever it was would leave her the heck alone.
[attr="class","scroll"] Although Oliver had spent four years in the twenty-first century, he still understood very little about it. Mostly because his time in this era was either spent in a secluded camp for demigods or the underworld. Both places probably weren’t the most accurate representations of the current state of the world today but that was all the young Demigod had as a reference. The scientific and social breakthroughs that humanity had made over the years made Oliver feel like he was living in a fictional novel for children. Flying vehicles, carriages that pulled themselves without horses, and many other whimsical things had been invented while Oliver was in stasis. Even the way humans interacted with each other had drastically changed and it all seemed like too much. So, Oliver’s father had spent a year with him in the underworld in an attempt to allow Oliver to read up on the modern world and adjust before being sent back to earth. But once he had returned to earth, Oliver often found himself yearning to go back to the underworld. Things there made more sense, there was a clear chain of command and a simple order to things that put the young Demigod at ease.[break][break]
Despite the confusing nature of this world, literature slowly allowed him to piece things together. A bit of history one month, a bit of science the next, some sociology here, and a bit of philosophy slowly allowed the young demigod to understand the teens around him and the state of the planet. Today he intended to catch up on science, so Oliver had a copy of Stephen Hawking’s "a brief history of time" clutched in his left hand. A lit cigarette slowly burnt between his lips as he strolled through the forest in search of a peaceful reading spot. Preferably somewhere with a large tree to provide shade, somewhere quiet and safe from the constant chaos of the other demigods. The further he walked, the more the silence of the forest took over.[break][break]
Oliver took a drag from the cigarette he had balanced between his lips as his pace slowed down. Then he calmly released a small cloud of smoke while allowing his completely black eyes to scan the foliage for a comfortable place to have a seat and read. All he could hear now was the occasional chirping of birds and the continuous sound of a nearby river flowing. So, Oliver followed the sound of the water hoping that he’d find a large tree to sit under near the riverbank. But as he walked closer and closer to the river, he felt something strange in the air. He couldn’t really explain it, but he had felt a similar aura in certain parts of the underworld. He took yet another drag of his cigarette and released a puff of smoke as the strange aura in the air grew even stronger the more he walked.[break][break]
“Ahh the river of Phlegethon” Oliver spoke to himself nonchalantly as he finally remembered what part of the underworld, he had felt this strange aura in. Something beyond the river gave off massive amounts of the same unsettling energy he was feeling now. Sadly, his father had never allowed him anywhere near that river while living with him in the realm of the dead. So, Oliver was more than curious about what was giving off this kind of aura in the realm of the living. He followed the sound of the river, as well as the strange energy in the air until he found the source of both. At the epicenter of the strange energy in the air, Oliver found a woman with curly blonde hair dressed in a sundress.[break][break]
Since Oliver had felt this feeling in the realm of the dead before, he initially assumed the woman was drowning someone in the river. He approached from behind her and all he could see from that angle was that she was crouching near the river with her hands in it, so the assumption that someone was being drowned was the only one that made sense. The woman’s golden locks seemed a bit unkempt as strands of hair escaped a loose ponytail. When Oliver stepped closer he accidentally stepped on a twig, which caused it to crack and alert the woman of his presence. When she looked back, he decided to talk since he had already been detected. ”Pleased to make your acquaintance. just make sure you bury whoever your drowning with some food or alcohol. The underworld has long and dreary queues for newcomers. Having a snack would really help .” He spoke bluntly and nonchalantly before taking another long drag from his cigarette and releasing smoke into the air. His British accent was as thick and audible as ever. [break][break] He had been around enough death to become somewhat desensitized to it at this point so even if his guess was right and this woman was indeed drowning someone, it wouldn’t have bothered Oliver in the slightest. But this odd energy in the air on the other hand was definitely something Oliver was still curious about, he could feel his thoughts become just a bit louder than usual.

It was just another Greek camper, one that Dani had never really spoken to before. In the three years she had spent at Camp Half-Blood, Dani had made very few friends, and that was mostly because she was either entirely too unpredictable or she was too crazy. It had only bothered Dani that she didn't make enough friends to stave off her boredom, but she had never really been the sharing-and-caring type. Dani's friends were usually the thrill-seeker or partier type, the latter of which wasn't too common in Camp and the former of which usually involved too many monsters - ah, the ever adventurous life of a demigod. Dani had gotten sick of the lifestyle many times since she'd been forced to move to Camp; if her best friend hadn't given his life to get her there, she would have gladly gone back out to the mortal world permanently to truly enjoy her life, monsters be dammed. Mortals were so much more fun than demigods.
This one just a few metres from her was some son of the Big Three, from what she could remember. Dani knew faces, but not so much names, and considering her wildchild attitude, she wasn't surprised that they hadn't been introduced yet. He spoke funny, though, about making her acquaintance, like some old, posh snob, and Dani thought it was beyond weird that his first thought was that she was drowning someone in the river. Something about his aura raised Dani's hackles, and the madness under her skin surged to the forefront of her brain, ready to defend her and attack this demigod if she needed it to. The heavy oiliness in her mind and lungs caused Dani to stand, raising the skirt of her dress a little even though it was unnecessary, and taking barefoot steps into the river. The feel of the cool water against her hand was no longer enough to keep her head; she needed more of the uncomfortably cold sensation to keep some part of herself grounded in reality.
"You're freaking morbid," she replied darkly, scrunching her nose and turning her back on the other demigod. Dani focused her eyes on the water rushing past her legs, savouring the slow numbing of her toes. Maybe she'd even end up taking a bath in this pathetic excuse of a river if she had to. Gods knew she might need it if the madness didn't abate.
The familiar smell of cigarette smoke wafted over to her belatedly, and like prey in sudden scent of a predator, Dani's gaze flicked up to the other camper again. Darkened eyes alighted upon the cigarette between the camper's fingers, and the madness reached for it like a toddler. How long had it been since she'd had a smoke? A month? About as long as it had been since she'd last had a drink. A fleeting memory surfaced of some underage teenage party that she had gatecrashed, invited by some of her old high school 'friends' who had practically forced her to come at the insinuation that she was too chicken to show her face to them anymore. She had gotten entirely too drunk (which was a feat considering her parentage) and puked on the Greyhound back.
Licking her lips as she continued eyeing the cigarette, Dani decided she might as well try to be on her best behaviour and even make friends with this guy. She didn't know how he had smuggled the contraband into a Roman legion camp, but she figured anyone who could do that was worth knowing. The smile was strained on her face - she hadn't found reason for the expression lately. "Can I bum a smoke off you?" So perhaps the daughter of Dionysus lacked a little in the social department. She blamed it completely on the robotic Romans of their new home. She had thought the Ares kids had big enough sticks up their posteriors, but the Romans were a whole other league.
When the blonde stood up, it quickly became easy to notice the absence of a floating corpse in the river. Not even a fish had been harmed by this woman, yet Oliver still felt a strange aura emanate from her. This blonde demigod gave off an aura that made him homesick for the underworld, and since it clearly wasn’t the aura of death, Oliver couldn’t tell what it was. Maybe it was related to her power, or maybe they might have been genetically related. The wild look in her eye, the messy hair and the fact that she was in the river with her bare feet definitely made it seem like she was strange enough to be a child of Hades too. Oliver was convinced that his father had hundreds of kids no one knew about somewhere out there, since Hades had managed to convince the other gods that Oliver was dead for more than three centuries. so, what would stop him from having more hidden offspring?[break][break]
When she finally spoke to him the first thing she did was call him morbid, which amused Oliver a little. He let out a subtle chuckle while sitting down beside the riverbank. Then he watched her scrunch her cute button nose before turning her back on him. ”I apologize, discussing something that is a normal and natural part of everyone’s life is strange and tremendously rude of me. ” Oliver spoke with his usual nonchalant tone which was nearly impossible to read. Then he paused for a second to take another drag of his cigarette and exhale the smoke before he continued speaking. ”its much healthier to completely ignore the concept of death and pretend it doesn’t exist, until it comes for you” Since she had her back turnt to him, Oliver decided to lay on his back and looked up at the clouds to avoid being accused of staring at her gluteus maximus, even though a part of him wanted to. While laying down, he used his book as a makeshift pillow then continued smoking.[break][break]
When she asked to bum a smoke off him, it took a second for Oliver to process the strange question. Luckily, the sentence had “a smoke” in it, which made the slang much easier to decipher. He didn’t feel like sharing this particular cigarette with anyone, so he reached into his pocket and pulled out a beat-up Marlboro box. Clearly, the box had been hidden in several uncomfortable places resulting in the external wear and tear, but luckily its contents hadn’t been squashed. Oliver gave the box a brief shake and felt two objects move around inside it. The first was a small gas lighter, the second object in the box was the last cigarette of the month, which meant he would have to wait for another delivery when the next month began. ”sure.” Oliver sat up straight and handed her the Marlboro box before returning to his previous position of laying on his back, then he took another drag from his cigarette while looking at the clouds. [break][break]
It was probably strange for a camper to have this kind of contraband, but he had managed to secure his supply line before even coming to camp. During his time in the realm of the dead, Oliver and his father had managed to get along due to their shared love of nicotine and literature. As a result of that connection, he had managed to convince his father to send him a pack of cigarettes and a new book once a month. It was the only thing Oliver had ever asked for, and it was probably the only thing he would ever get. So once each month, he would wait for one of his father’s minions, a hellhound, or even a walking corpse to deliver him a package with a new book and a box of smokes. These two necessities were all that kept him sane in this military camp he was always confined to. ” well since we've established that you aren't on a killing spree you may continue your impression of an eerie river spirit. I shall not bother you again.” he spoke while chuckling a little. in reality, she hadn't done anything strange, he just enjoyed messing with her a little.

The chuckle from the male camper was barely audible and obviously not intended for her ears, but Dani still heard it, along with the sounds of the camper settling himself down on the ground behind her. She hadn't really meant the morbid comment as an insult, although it did come out waspish - it was more of a statement of fact. At least she hadn't gone up against him in so many words and told him to leave her alone, or worse, told him that he was boring. She didn't know him, of course, but Dani thought being considered boring was one of the worst insults possible. That was what she thought of pretty much all the Romans in this camp, except maybe one or two select individuals. Those individuals had taken a weapon to her; she'd elevated their boring rank to somewhat interesting just for that.
The other Greek camper was definitely weird though, and Dani wasn't sure yet if that was a step above boring. His funny words and accent wrapped in the air around her, and a part of Dani wanted to snap at him to just talk normal like everyone else. That part - and everything he'd said, something about death - was very quickly quashed at the scent of the cigarette. He could have been talking in a completely different language and Dani would have mimed in every possible way to ask him for a cigarette. She had expected him to let her take a drag, maybe two, but to her surprise, he actually handed over the box. It had his last cigarette and a small lighter, and Dani's face twisted slightly at the gesture. She tried not to read into it, honestly, because she hated the idea that she might be indebted to some random's show of kindness or friendliness, but Dani felt supremely uncomfortable that he'd handed over the last of his stash despite the cigarettes not something one easily could get in camp.
Well, maybe it wasn't the last of his stash. Perhaps it was just the last in this box, or maybe the guy was some son of Hermes or another sneaky immortal who could just escape camp to get himself another pack, or maybe he knew someone who could get him the illegal goods. There could have been any number of reasons he was so willing to hand over the last cigarette. This was not turning out like Jacob and his animal crackers. Dani wouldn't let it.
Jaw locking as she held the cigarette between her lips, the click of the lighter was clearly audible as its flame burned the tip of the cigarette. The daughter of Dionysus forced the thoughts of Jacob and kindness out with her exhale, the familiar thickness of the smoke in her lungs a very welcome distraction. Even the madness receded a little, dulled by the nicotine, and Dani's next inhale was slow and deep and heavy, savouring the rush of the drug into her veins and her mind. Unaware that she'd closed her eyes, she opened them and looked around her - the trees were clearer and sharper, the leaves greener and the bark darker, the fog of her disease lifting slightly with the surge of nicotine.
She turned to look at the other camper still lying on the ground. Dani had planned on returning to the river when she'd gotten the smoke, but the distracting cold was no longer required. Instead, she sat down somewhat ungracefully near the other camper, close enough to toss his lighter back to him with a gentle twist of her wrist, but far enough to give him his space. The mention of murder had her studying the guy with a more interested eye, if only to try and figure out who his parent might be. The joke about her impersonating a river spirit was disregarded for her reply: "Alright, so you're either some crime fan or you're a kid of someone from down under. Which is it?"
[attr="class","scroll"] Oliver paused to flick some ash off the tip of his cigarette, then he placed it between his lips and inhaled smoke once again. his cigarette balanced loosely between his lips as he watched her. He had noticed a brief look of discomfort make its way onto her gentle features when he handed her the cigarette box, and that look roused his curiosity. He knew his words couldn’t have been the source of her discomfort, because she didn’t seem like the type that cared for the words or opinions of others. At least That was his first impression of her, but maybe Oliver just wasn’t as good at reading people as he had initially assumed. He quickly shrugged off that thought when he saw the other demigod take the first drag from her cigarette. Oliver watched the blonde inhale deeply and close her eyes, a peaceful look momentarily made its way onto her face. A look that even made Oliver smirk a little, mostly because he knew exactly what she was feeling. ” it’s been a while, hasn’t it? You’re stronger than I am. I would have gone mad after a month or so. ”[break][break]
After speaking he looked back up at the clouds for a moment to think. Then once he was sure about his next statement he spoke. ” from next month onward, feel free to find me around camp whenever you need another cigarette.… or if you ever want to help me mess with the Romans a little.” he looked up at her and smiled a little while watching her sit down next to him. From the first moment he had seen her until now, her blue eyes always seemed pensive, she seemed to always have a lot on her mind for some reason. which was a stark contrast to Oliver’s own empty black eyes. He had no ties to this world at all anymore. Since he had nothing and no one to care for in this foreign world, there wasn’t much for him to think about, except finding ways to entertain himself while he existed. Maybe that was why some of the gods were such frackers, some of them probably just didn’t have any ties to this world and existed to entertain themselves. Like Oliver.[break][break]
Oliver had considered sneaking out of camp several times just to get a better understanding of what the world out there was really like, reading about it in books and hearing stories from other people just wasn’t enough anymore. He wanted to experience it himself. But he had never actually snuck out because he never had a guide from this era to help him navigate the confusing modern world. But maybe, with enough convincing the blonde demigod would help him out with that.[break][break]
Oliver was snapped out of his thoughts when she tossed his lighter back at him. He didn’t move to catch the lighter, instead, he continued laying on his back and allowed it to land on his chest. When she asked him a question he calmly nodded, ” well, I am a child of hades if that’s what you’re asking. However, I’m Not sure if that’s directly linked to my morbid nature since my siblings aren’t the same way… May I attempt to deduce your parentage?” he sat up straight and looked at her closely. A bit too closely, Oliver briefly invaded her personal space to get a good look at her. Then After a few seconds of taking in all her features, he finally spoke ” hmm, big blue eyes with a distant look in them like a sailor at sea, and you have an affinity for bodies of water like the river you were just in. I would guess you’re related to Poseidon. ”

She was not reading into it, she was not reading into it. Deep inhale. Long exhale. The madness lazed behind her eyes, satiated by the distraction of the nicotine. Besides, so what if he was being nice to her by offering to deal her this drug? Dani had taken advantage of other people's kindness before, gladly taking whatever was offered to her and maybe even more. She had always been a bit of a black hole when it came to being appreciated or being considered a friend or being considered fun or funny. Dani had craved validation all her life, even if she always tried to exude a devil-may-care-because-Dani-certainly-didn't sort of attitude. This guy was offering her to run her illegal goods like they were in prison, for Tartarus' sake. Normal-Dani would have laughed and flirted her pretty little head off if this had been any other scenario.
Perhaps it was because the trauma from their camp was just too fresh, too recent, too real. The daughter of Dionysus had struggled with living at camp, of course, but now that it was gone and they had to start over in a place that already had its own set of rules and its own people, Dani could appreciate what she'd had. It was always the case with her. She had always appreciated things too late, taken things for granted, and every loss felt even more visceral because of this. The continuing downturn of her mood caused the madness to flex, slowly waking in her internal pain. Another long drag of the cigarette caused it to pause again, and Dani took advantage of the brief lull to reply to the other Greek. "About a month for me, too," she acknowledged in regards to his statement of it being a while since her last smoke. She didn't respond about going mad - she always was, anyway.
Another openly-curious, if slightly suspicious, gaze studied the male camper again, Dani turning over his offer to provide her cigarettes and deciding it would make her life infinitely easier if she had a steady supply of nicotine. His small smile was met with a tentative one of her own which only grew wider at the idea of messing around with the Romans. She didn't want or need them to be good, deep friends, and from what she was understanding, he was just offering to be her cigarette-dealer and fellow troublemaker. Dani could accept that. She hadn't needed to read into anything, after all; he was just a Greek camper just as irritated by the rules and the people in this infernal legion. "I'd like that. Both those ideas. Where do you get the smokes, anyway?"
A part of her wondered how she was going to pay him for the cigarettes. Normal-Dani would have flirted suggestively about how she could pay him, but the demigod found herself unsure about their situation. This guy had felt... a bit distant, politely so, not really wanting to get into her personal space physically or otherwise. And the daughter of Dionysus found she sort of accepted that. He just had a different vibe, and vibe was something Dani was acutely aware of. Gods, was she finally going insane in this camp? She blamed the Romans completely for her change in personality.
The answer of his parentage didn't really fill in any blanks for Dani as to why he felt different. Was it because Hades was an earthy sort of god? Cool and steady like a rock, quiet and heavy like a cave? Dani wasn't sure, but her musings were interrupted when the boy decided to try and guess her parentage. Dani leaned one elbow on her knee and hunched down slightly as she moved forward slightly in a wordless acceptance of his game, just as he himself pulled closer as though to study her. Their sudden nearness startled Dani into stillness. His eyes were unlike anything she had seen before. They looked... a bit like the darkness she kept in the back of her mind.
Thankfully, the camper spoke and broke her brief trance, and Dani pulled back to have another smoke. She forced herself to chuckle at his guess, somewhat rattled at seeing her own madness reflected in his eyes. "Not even close," she said in what should have been a teasing way, but was tinged with a bit of metal. Her ring and pinkie finger brushed away a strand of hair dancing against the side of her face, even as her fore and middle fingers held on to the cigarette. "Daughter of Dionysus. I'm Dani, by the way. And thanks for the smoke."
[attr="class","scroll"] Oliver slowly inhaled and savored what he knew would be the last drag of his cigarette, then he released the smoke from his lungs while looking at the little stub that remained. It had clearly been used up and had served him well. Once he was done with his cigarette his dark eyes began looking for a suitable place to dispose of his cigarette bud, then he suddenly focused on the river. Before he knew it, his fingers had formed a makeshift catapult and were prepared to launch the stub like a projectile. His left eye closed so he could aim properly, then without warning, he flicked the stub right into the river and smirked a little at his accurate shot. The moment his small projectile hit the surface of the water it released an audible hiss as its last embers fizzled out and it was carried away by the current of the river. Immediately after his little playful cigarette flick, his attention returned to the demigod that sat beside him.[break][break]
Luckily, Oliver had turned around just in time to see a smile grace her features and he took a second or two to enjoy her bright smile. On the outside, he looked as nonchalant and disinterested as usual. But internally, he could feel a part of him being warmed by the blonde demigod’s smile. The warm ember caused by her smile was equivalent to his cigarette stub he had thrown in the river. It lasted for a moment before it was quickly swallowed up by the river of darkness within him and fizzled out. Just like how his stub had fizzled out mere seconds ago. Oliver was slightly phased by the brief warmth her smile had caused in him, but he easily managed to push that thought out of his head for now. When she spoke about liking both of his ideas a small smirk made its way onto his face. Oliver’s troublemaking ways had made him feel like a porcupine in a petting zoo or a piranha amongst salmon. So, being acquainted with other piranha’s that swam these waters was definitely a step in the right direction for the dark-haired demigod.[break][break]
Her question about the origins of his smokes seemed like an innocent enough inquiry so he didn’t mind answering it. ” Once a month father sends a hellhound or a corpse to deliver a pack of smokes and a book. It seems like asking for a lot, but it's all I’ve ever asked him for in three centuries and some change, so I guess it balances out. ” although his father was a particularly difficult man to be around, he was still fair to some extent so Oliver was okay with him. He had never expected the god of the underworld to be nurturing in any way, so his father’s hands-off approach to parenting didn’t bother Oliver at all. He knew Hades cared for him and his siblings, he just showed it in much more subtle ways than most gods. Oliver was snapped out of his thoughts when he heard the blonde demigod chuckle at his guess and reveal her parentage and her name.[break][break]
In response, Oliver chuckled at his own horrible guess before he responded. ” fracking I was way off on that one. Dionysus sounds like a really fun parent… please don’t tell me that means you have an immunity to alcohol. That would be more like a curse than a power.” he spoke then paused for a second to take a better look at her. ” Wait, disregard that question. You look too young to be drinking anyway kiddo” he commented teasingly while patting her head gently. He obviously didn’t intend to be mean; he was just playing with her again. In all honesty he didn't even know how old she was. Then he realized he hadn’t reciprocated the gesture of her introduction, so he quickly rectified that in order to avoid being considered rude. ” I am Oliver of house Belmont. But I prefer Olly” a slight hint of humanity entered his tone for just a second as he remembered his family and the simplicity of life in the Belmont manor. ” I have a question for you Dani, do you ever miss the world outside of the camp?”
[break][break] His question would serve as a way of assessing her willingness to venture out of the camp’s borders and if she would potentially be a good guide for him in the outside world.

A weird lance of pain shot through her heart at the mention of Oliver's father. Perhaps when she had been a child, before everything happened, she could have been quite close with her mother and step-father, although she didn't know that he was just her step-father at the time. Perhaps, sometime in her childhood, she had been carefree and her life had been easy and she had a normal family life. The whisper of memory, like a forgotten dream, drifted through her mind - a small makeshift lemonade stand outside their house; her blonde hair flying loose behind her as she reached the peak of the parabola on the swing in the playground; the brilliant colours of her crayons spilled across her small desk, the sunlight streaming in through her window, peaceful and quiet, turning her head to the door and wondering--
Viciously, Dani slammed a wall against the last memory. It had been her last happy one in her childhood, the last day she had ever felt at peace. That was a day she refused to think about, and Dani struggled against the madness again. Her lips were down at the corners, quivering slightly as she took another drag of the cigarette. The tip burned briefly, and Dani focused her eyes on it, noting distractedly that it was getting close to the filter now - too little, not enough, never enough. Nothing was ever enough. Everything was just a bandaid but her injury was an infected disease that had travelled all throughout her body and into her brain and would never be healed. A slightly shaking hand combed through her blonde hair, as though she could literally pull the madness from out of her head.
With supreme effort, like walking through hardening cement, Dani fought to focus on the boy's words. She blinked as his words sunk in. "Wait, three centuries?" She repeated his words as though saying them out loud would make more sense, but it didn't help. Her eyes looked over the camper again, hearing the 'three centuries' and not quite connecting the dots. She pointed her fingers at him, the butt of the cigarette still between her fore and middle fingers. "You. Are three hundred years old?" The revelation completely distracted Dani from her mini breakdown as she struggled to process this information. "Are you like... a vampire or something? Did Hades work some sort of insane deal to keep you alive for this long?"
Dani shook her head at that. She knew they led pretty dang freaking weird lives, considering they were demigods and their parents were immortal gods and there were real monsters out there, but this was something way beyond anything she'd ever heard. Of course, Dani had heard stories of some sort of casino somewhere that stopped mortals from aging in some strange alternate time dimension thing - maths and science were not Dani's strongest suites. She had been curious once upon a time to find the place, if only to escape from her reality. The daughter of Dionysus still wasn't sure if she wouldn't go into it if she ever found out, gladly leaving her life behind her to remain in a state of stasis.
The final pull on her cigarette coincided with the boy's question about whether her parentage meant she was immune to the effects of alcohol. She had just shrugged her shoulders at his question when he backtracked and asked about her age, and Dani blew out the smoke in answer. "Think it's a bit late for you to worry about my age, buddy," she replied, unimpressed. Her expression only turned darker as he patted her head, even if it was a joke, and Dani tilted her chin towards him in provocation, the slightest smirk on her lips and the spark of a challenge in her eyes. "Well, Oliver of House Belmont, come closer and I can show you how old I can be." Was it a good idea to taunt a son of Hades? Probably not, but Dani was never one to back down from pushing someone else in a battle of wills. And she had actually thought their distance was respectful. Dani should have known she wouldn't stay respectful for too long.
His question about whether she missed the outside world or not was only met with a shrug. "I was always in and out of Camp Half-Blood," she answered truthfully as she disposed of her own cigarette butt with a flick of her fingers. Unlike Oliver, she had not aimed for anywhere in particular. "I've only missed it while we've been here in this gods-danged prison." It was the freedom she missed the most, to be able to go and buy smokes or drink or party or do whatever the living heck she please. She'd had plenty of opportunities in Camp Half-Blood where she could quite literally just walk straight off of camp, walk down the hill past the barriers and be in the mortal world. Here, there were guards everywhere, and they were more difficult to distract - she knew because she'd already tried to get out once or twice.
[attr="class","scroll"] Oliver ran a hand through his messy dark hair while listening to the blonde demigod enquire about his age and how he could be three centuries old. Honestly, he was as confused as her about the circumstances of his life and the forward leap in time he had unwillingly taken. He still remembered his last day in his own timeline and there hadn’t been any indication that his life would take such a weird turn. Oliver had awoken far earlier than what would be expected of a young noble on that day, he vividly remembered how the manor was filled with the scent of breakfast and the sounds of the house servants setting the table and boiling the bathwater. While waiting for the rest of his family to wake up he snuck into his grandfather’s study and used his grandfather’s tobacco pipe while playing the piano to entertain himself. He remembered the sun’s rays being reflected from their silver cutlery, and the soft music playing in the background as he enjoyed breakfast with his family. He even remembered the boring tutor that tried to teach him about politics and the new fencing instructor his family had hired on that day because he had surpassed his last fencing instructor in skill. Then when he finally went to sleep after a long day, he remembers waking up in the underworld three centuries later with no explanation.[break][break]
Obviously, he did all he could to return home or at least find out what had happened to him. Sadly, his father was quite cagey about the details. Whenever Oliver enquired, He was merely told that it was for his own good. But for some reason, he found it difficult to believe that existing in a world where everyone and everything he cared for had died and turned to dust ages ago. At some point during his year in the underworld he became aware that his family was somewhere there too, he stubbornly searched for them despite his father’s warnings. And when he finally found them in the underworld, he instantly regretted it, he wished he had never searched for them at all and did his best to forget the entire ordeal. He preferred to remember them as they lived.[break][break]
When Dani asked if he was a vampire or something, it allowed Oliver to escape his own thoughts and return to the present moment. He forced himself to chuckle and forget about what he had been thinking about before he spoke. ” To be honest with you, I have no idea what happened. I went to sleep on a regular night in May 1703 and then I woke up in the underworld. For that entire year I was in the underworld I was convinced I was dead. Despite being told otherwise…. Sometimes I still think I died centuries ago.” Oliver did his best to act and sound as nonchalant as usual while shrugging.[break][break]
The blonde demigod beside him clearly didn’t enjoy the joke about her age, or the pat on the head. The darkness he had felt in her built up and showed itself in her eyes and her facial expression, but more so in her eyes. Despite the fact that their eyes differed quite a lot in color, when he looked into her blue eyes Oliver saw a look that he often saw when he looked in the mirror. Then when she issued a verbal challenge, he smirked. A beautiful woman telling him to come closer, many men would have swan dived into that situation in a millisecond, But Oliver knew better. Based on what he had seen from her and her general aura, he knew that underestimating her would be a big mistake. Especially if she was as dangerous he assumed she was. But on the other hand, Oliver was never the type of person to shy away from a challenge. As a young man with nothing to lose but his own life, he welcomed risk and danger with little to no hesitation or concern for his life.[break][break]
Oliver calmly looked into her eyes for a second to distract her while using his umbrakinesis to gain control of her shadow, just as a little insurance policy in case she attacked him. Then he began moving closer to her. ”Fine. If you insist.” he spoke while moving closer. He didn’t know what she had planned or why she had issued the challenge, but he was about to find out the answer to both of those questions at the risk of his own physical wellbeing. [break][break] He was raised to be a gentleman, so he didn’t want to get too uncomfortably close to her. He got a bit closer than he had been before, when he attempted to guess her parentage but he refused to get any closer. He maintained a small smile to match her own challenging smirk then he continued speaking while half expecting her to punch the living Hades out of him because of how close he was. ” well, I haven’t been outside of camp.. ever. I intend to change that. But I need someone who is familiar with the world of today to guide me.”

There was crazy and weird and bizarre, and that was pretty normal for their demigod lives. They did, after all, fight monsters on a regular and lived in a world where 99% of the population didn't even know they existed. But then there was batsh*it insane, and that was a perfectly normal looking demigod telling her that he'd been alive since 1703. Dani's mouth dropped open unattractively as Oliver casually mentioned the date. He was remarkably casual and uncaring for having been alive for three hundred years and missing about 280 of them by the sounds of things.
Dani couldn't imagine what it was like to live that long. She was already struggling with the nineteen years she'd lived through - she couldn't imagine repeating her life day in and day out for centuries. She briefly wondered if that meant Oliver was immortal, and a part of her viciously wanted to unleash her magic on him and see if it affected him less than a normal demigod. He probably was normal in every other aspect aside from his age, but still Dani was curious to try. In the face of his kindness, though, Dani supposed she would test out her theory at a later date. Probably.
"So you were hanging out with all the ghosties and dead people in the Underworld for a whole year?" Dani would have been driven mad - or even madder - by that. She pictured a large, dreary cavern, endless darkness, and lines upon lines of the dead, of translucent ghosts stretching out into forever. She imagined their loneliness, their frustration, their coldness. With a shudder, Dani pulled herself out of the vision, and the madness curled around the sensation of gloom like a cat cuddling up to a fire. A sharp glint entered Dani's eyes as she latched on to his words to escape her own mind. "I can help you test out if you're dead or not, if you like."
There was a flicker of something out of the corner of her eye, but as Oliver took her up on her challenge, Dani found herself distracted by his eyes. The madness in her mind surged to the forefront, reaching for the darkness it could sense in the son of Hades. It wanted her to reach out and touch his face, to move from her skin to his, to see her through his eyes. But Oliver kept a safe distance, close enough that she could see the shadow of darkness in his eyes but still far enough that she would have to reach uncomfortably to touch him. She could always take a step forward and close the gap between them, of course, but Dani would keep her madness to herself for now. Just for a little bit longer. They weren't in a War Game, after all; Dani wasn't out to make him hurt. He was being smart - maybe he'd seen the black behind her eyes and decided to stay safe.
His eyelashes were long and dark, framing his eyes, and his cheekbones were arresting. Dani had thought she was going to respect his space, but the madness was taking over, gaining strength from his closeness and her distraction. She didn't notice as she leaned forwards, as though he was a magnet and she was a wayward piece of metal with no choice but to come closer. "I'm familiar with the world of today more than you think," she murmured, words with a double meaning and the small smile on her face sharpening into a smirk. "Want me to show you around?"
Despite the two meanings of her words, Dani did also mean showing him the outside world. It was high time she got out of this gods-forsaken camp, anyway; she needed to get drunk and maybe other types of intoxicated just to get over the horror of the camp burning down and the upheaval it had caused in her life. She needed to hang out with the mortals because they were infinitely more fun than any of the demigods in camp right now, and they would be far more adventurous and far more accommodating to any kind of crazy scheme. Dani needed to be distracted, and the mortals always provided that in spades. They were easily susceptible to the crazy practically oozing out of her skin, and Dani craved the kind of attention they could give her and the recklessness they could get into. She wouldn't be able to get out of camp by herself, of course, but if Oliver had any kind of darkness power, she was sure it would be a piece of cake. Then she could show him how people in 2021 partied - and any kind of corrupting activity was something Dani reveled in.
[attr="class","scroll"] The closer Oliver got to this woman, the more powerful the aura he felt from her became. Her presence excited the darkness within him, and that excitement manifested itself in the physical world through their shadows. Both of their shadows had slowly become pitch black since he had moved closer to her. But of course, Oliver hadn’t noticed that at all, and why would he? His eyes were already content with looking at the blonde demigod and his mind was too focused on their conversation. So darkening shadows seemed rather inconsequential. Oliver looked and sounded quite disinterested and nonchalant while discussing the details of his time skip. But behind his indifferent facade, he actually felt a bit of discomfort whenever he discussed the topic since it inevitably resulted in memories of his loved one’s resurfacing. Luckily, the blonde demigod’s mouth fell open in surprise just in time to provide a bit of comic relief to the situation and put Oliver at ease. Watching her delicate features produce that surprised facial expression allowed him to smile in amusement and escape his thoughts so he could return to the present moment with her.[break][break]
In all fairness, her surprised expression was completely justified considering what he had just told her about himself. Oliver understood just how insane and whimsical his time-travel story sounded. Especially since he couldn’t provide any kind of physical evidence to substantiate his story. He knew that having conversations like this with people would earn him a padded cell and weekly visits from doctors who use words like cognitive and spectrum. But he didn’t really mind if she thought he was crazy. When she asked if he had spent time with ghosts and ghouls during his year in the underworld he released a single chuckle before nodding, ” yeah I did. surprisingly ,those ghosties are a livelier bunch than most of the Romans we have here….but they also taught me that Legends and losers inhabit the underworld as equals. ” the underworld had thoroughly forced several harsh lessons about reality into his head. One of them was to never judge a person by their social status.[break][break]
Oliver had learned the meaninglessness of earthly social status when his family, A noble family was found in the same spot in the underworld as ordinary house servants, gardeners, and other common people. Witnessing that, allowed him to understand that his successes and failures on earth wouldn’t mean sh*t in the long run. While this may have disheartened other people, it allowed him to focus on getting as much fun and pleasure out of life as possible while he could. ” the best we can do while we live is have fun and enjoy each other’s company. ” The last part of his statement carried a bit of a flirtatious tone to it. He couldn’t help but flirt just a little, it would have been impossible not to while looking into her big blue eyes from this range. His dark eyes slowly took in the cute freckles that decorated her face, her delicate button nose, and her full pouty lips. Oliver could feel the darkness within him reach out to something in her. Something remarkably similar to his own darkness.[break][break]
When he noticed her lean forward, he felt something push him forward as well until their faces were only a few inches apart. The darkness inside him was practically reaching out to her madness and could almost touch it. the moment she asked if he wanted her to show him around, he nodded just a little before he verbally responded. ” yeah, I’d like that.” after speaking he closed his eyes, then he closed the distance between them by leaning forward until their lips met. The moment Oliver felt her soft lips against his, something surged through his entire body, he began kissing her slowly while Their shadows combined to form a wide pitch-black circle on the ground beneath them. Without warning Black flames erupted from that dark circle and surrounded them both. Because they were both seated, the flames were tall enough to almost reach their shoulders.[break][break]
Even though they were surrounded by roaring black flames, no additional heat could be felt, so Oliver hadn’t noticed anything while kissing her. Then he slowly pulled away from the slow passionate kiss after a few seconds. His eyelids felt heavy when he tried to open his eyes again, and a small smile was plastered on his face until he looked around and saw black flames roaring viciously around them. The look of confusion on his face made it evident that he wasn’t responsible for this, or at least he didn’t think he was. He hadn’t seen his powers behave like this before, heck he didn’t even know if these were Hades flames, normal shadows, or something else entirely. All he knew is that he couldn’t feel any heat, despite how intensely these flames were burning. Maybe this is why the darkness in him had been reaching out for her so much. Maybe his darkness was like a flammable oil, and it detected something like a lighter living within her. All he knew was that they were dealing with forces that mortals couldn’t understand.[break][break]

Dani made a rude noise at Oliver's mention of the dead being livelier than the Romans. She didn't doubt that in the least - a whole undead army could pop up in Camp Jupiter and Dani would probably choose to side with them just for sheer excitement. Her boredom had reached new levels in this camp where she couldn't escape and she had nothing but drills and marching and combat lessons every day. A bored Dani was a dangerous Dani, because boredom allowed her madness to take over more easily. As it was, she lived with it as a constant companion, right there next to her own consciousness, trying not to let it show in her eyes.
Oliver talking about the life lessons the dead had taught him didn't resonate much with her, though. Dani didn't like thinking about things like that. There were very few life lessons she was interested in, and as far as she was aware, she'd already learned the most important ones. Things like equality and status not mattering in the end hardly mattered to her now, but she didn't want to tell him that. Oliver was interesting and he was beautiful, and Dani didn't want to completely scare him away. Besides, she didn't have anyone else to talk to at this exact moment, and with him around it was easier to ignore the call of the darkness in her mind. If they had alcohol, she would have cheers'ed his comment about living life to have fun.
Boys, though, boys were always interesting for the daughter of Dionysus. She still remembered with great fondness the legionnaire she'd affected with her powers during the War Games, causing him to turn against his own side. That had been the most thrilling thing she'd had happen in months - not counting the whole 'almost burned to death' thing. She still didn't even know his name, but names had never mattered much to her. And now this boy was getting too close and he'd offered her his last cigarette and was wanting to have adventures with her outside camp and he wasn't going away. If anything, he was coming closer, and Dani was no longer fighting the darkness within; it was no longer content with staying under her skin. The madness lifted from her pores to touch the son of Hades, and in the next second, his lips touched hers and Dani forgot about where they were for the moment.
The madness consumed her vision, and she was left with nothing but feeling, his closeness and the movement of his lips on hers even more visceral with the darkness clouding her eyes. She had missed this, had craved it for too long, just like she'd hungered for alcohol and cigarettes and parties and being away from all the demigod problems. Boys were an escape, and Dani was a supreme escape artist. It was a hobby and an addiction and a life skill all rolled into one, and she liked very few things more than to skip out. Dani forgot everything they'd just been talking about as she lost herself to the feeling and the madness and the darkness that wasn't just hers, not any more.
The intensity of the moment slowed to a halt as Oliver pulled away, and Dani opened her eyes slightly. The madness had rolled back, content that it had managed to escape her, glad that it had danced with someone else's mind for a bit. At first, all she could see was his face, her eyes reflected in his, the small smile on his lips as he looked back at her. And then she noticed the black flames surrounding them as they sat on the ground, and even though they didn't hurt or burn, Dani was uncomfortably aware they were surrounded by it. Licking her lips, Dani glanced around her as she studied the fire, the madness now turning skittish at the prospect of danger and trapped. "Hey, Oliver?" she said, her voice deceptively calm, "Mind turning down the flames a little? You totally don't need to get me hotter at all, and this miiight be a little too intense right now." Despite the possibility of danger, though, Dani couldn't help herself, cautiously sticking a finger out to test the fire, curious of the element she'd never seen before.
[attr="class","THREAD1BLCONTENT"] Oliver had become silent while intently staring at the black flames around them. He had been willing the flames away for a few seconds, but they seemed completely uninterested in his wishes, which was weird. Usually, Oliver had a natural psychic link with the shadows around him. Shadows in his vicinity seemed to naturally bend to his wishes, they leaned toward him as he walked by and directly changed in response to his mood. These black flames on the other hand seemed completely indifferent to him. They didn’t mimic his cold and calm demeanor like most shadows under his influence did, instead they were wild and they seemed to lack direction as if they had been created and given no purpose or instruction by the being who made them.
The energy he got from the flames didn’t feel like his own, so he was convinced that they weren’t his creation. Once he had made up his mind that these flames weren’t his, Oliver’s eyes began scanning the area for any other demigods. He had made up his mind on the fact that one of his siblings was playing a prank on him Or even worse, maybe his father was messing with him. Both scenarios were equally plausible, but the latter would definitely be worse since the gods had a much darker sense of humor than any mortal or demigod.
When Oliver heard Dani asking him to turn down the flames, his eyes shifted their focus toward her, he smirked lightly at the joke about getting her hotter. ” I wish I had thought of using flames to get you hotter….but sadly this is not my handy work. I think someone else is trying to get you all hot and bothered.” he spoke calmly before his eyes returned to scouring his surroundings for any spectators. Usually, he would have explained more, but he couldn’t at the moment since even he couldn’t understand the situation fully. His tone made it obvious that he didn’t take the flames seriously yet since he still assumed this was a prank by one of his siblings. For the most part, the flames seemed to ignore both of the demigods. They just continually burned intensely around them without making any further moves. However, When the blonde demigod reached out to probe the flames, they returned the favor.
One of the flames behaved like a tendril and reached out to Dani’s finger as slowly and cautiously as she did, then when her finger was close enough it suddenly reached out and wrapped itself around her finger like a boa constrictor trying to choke the life out of its prey. It tightened its grip while moving up her finger slowly as if it were trying to consume her. The black flame/tendril around her finger felt cold to the touch and the rest of the flames continued burning around them.
”oooh. Looks like someone likes you” Oliver commented with a small smirk on his face as he watched the flame turned tendril make its way up her finger and to her hand. However, his playful expression quickly became more serious when he noticed the black tendril begin to tighten its grip around her finger even more. When he noticed her finger beginning to change color due to the tight grip of the tendril wrapped around it, Oliver finally decided it was time to create some space between them, before his darkness hurt her in any way. ” alright, enough.” for the first time, his voice became stern and serious. The surrounding shadows of trees and animals seemed to cower and recoil in response to the sudden change in his demeanor, then the flames finally disappeared, and their shadows returned to normal. Although he was happy that the flames were gone, he realized that none of his siblings had revealed themselves even after he had spoken up. Which meant this was caused by something else, maybe he had more dark sh*t lurking in him than he thought. Or maybe, she was just a magnet for darkness. Either way, he needed to put some space between them until he figured out the cause of this malfunction in his powers.
Oliver reached down to pick up the book he had intended to read here, then he returned to his standing position and slipped his free hand into his pocket before turning to look at Dani. ” You’re probably the only person bold enough to stick your finger in a random fire. Or is it just bad survival instincts?” he chuckled just a bit while shaking his head in amusement. He wouldn’t have admitted it out loud, but her willingness to test out the unknown had impressed him. ” Anyway, I plan on leaving the camp at the end of the month, after collecting my monthly cigarette delivery. If you’re still interested, meet me here on Friday at four in the afternoon…. If you’re not interested, then Meeting you was still a pleasure.” he gave her a subtle bow, then he began walking away. Hopefully, the barracks would be peaceful enough for him to get a little reading done. .
Dani wasn't sure she was flattered or a little creeped out at the idea that someone else out there could possibly be causing the black flames around them. They weren't actively doing anything, of course, so it wasn't like the person meant them harm... right? No matter how much closer her skin got to the fire, it did not burn or hurt her, as though it was practically just shadows manifested with a more physical form. It was a strange magic, and Dani couldn't help but be fascinated by it. She had always been a curious and adventurous type, and the very real danger was completely ignored as Dani went to experiment with the flames.
Finally, her fingertip prodded the darkness, and it seemed to like her, hopping on to her finger like a cute little pet. A tendril - heavier than light, lighter than air - wrapped around her finger, and for a moment Dani watched it in fascination. She turned to look at Oliver when he told her it liked her, and she smiled at him briefly, before turning her attention back to the little thing. Before long, though, it started tightening its hold on her finger, and Dani tried to shake it off from her. When it refused to move, Dani's instinctive reaction was to call on the madness within her - only to find it had never receded completely like she'd thought. A hint of it permeated the very air around her, and she'd just been too distracted by the son of Hades to realize it. It bubbled over her blood, over her skin, saturating their environment.
With no clear defense and no idea how to stop the little black flame from choking her finger, Dani began to pull away, thinking that maybe distance would break the tendril from its motherlode. But before she could stand and try to escape the literal ring of fire, Oliver spoke from beside her. His tone was sharp and serious, and Dani's gaze whipped to the side to look at him; she wouldn't have guessed he'd be capable of that tone, but then again, he was a son of the Underworld. That particular god had never had the best temper, from what she'd heard. Unsurprisingly, the flames disappeared, and the world looked oddly... brighter. Less dark, less blacks, and Dani couldn't quite put her finger on why everything looked different.
She was still gathering her wits when Oliver spoke, making a joke about her survival instincts, and Dani only grinned. She gladly turned her back on the little mental voice that tried to rationalize her actions when it came to entertaining herself; she was surprised she still had a rational voice in the first place. It didn't often speak up, and when it did, Dani usually ignored it. "I like playing with fire," she teased back, smirk on her face once again implying a double meaning to her words. And then Oliver was talking again, and Dani's eyebrows furrowed slightly. Something weird had just happened between them, a misstep. Dani didn't know what it was, but she supposed she didn't really want to find out - people never truly felt comfortable around her. In fact, she was surprised he'd lasted this long.
Of course, that was the moment he bowed slightly to her - was that a thing from 300 years ago? because Dani was not a fan of the formality - and escaped before she could even tell him she'd be here. Was he just being polite? Was she that desperate to get out of camp and go for some smokes that she would come, even though it didn't feel like a genuine invitation anymore? "Alright, bye," she muttered sarcastically to his retreating back, volume too low to be heard. She sighed as she looked after his retreating figure. Demigods were freaking weird. Give her mortals any day - at least they knew how to party. With another glance around her as though she still wasn't sure what had just happened, Dani concluded she'd spent enough time in the woods by herself, and the nicotine had calmed the madness enough that she could go back to camp and pretend. She would be fine; she always pretended well.
