this guy's a grump. he's sarcastic and moody and he can't help himself from picking on people. both fortunately and unfortunately for him, he just happens to know exactly which buttons to press to really get people going. he has little to no self-preservation when it comes to bugging people and especially girls, even going so far as to push huntresses to their limits. once it comes to fighting, he can be a bit of a side-liner, preferring to find ways to sabotage the enemy rather than facing them head on. that's when his self-preservation really kicks in. he's not a coward, really, he just doesn't see why he has to die in a blaze of glory like what the ares kids seem to think is the goal of life.
[break][break]
zeph's got a bit of a dark outlook on life. he's a pessimist, and he can be a bit paranoid. he is also a bit careless, and does not think much about emotions and feelings, particularly of other people. his sense of humour is sharp and his idea of a good time is insulting people and flirting, sometimes at the same time. he's the epitome of a bad boy, and that's just how he likes it.
[break][break]
deep down, though, he is actually very caring of a few select people. top on that list is his little half-sister avery. he would rather die than have anything happen to her. in fact, she's the reason why he's been in and out of camp for the last few years, travelling america almost aimlessly. he tries not to show that he cares but he does. he's out to have fun along the way, too, something which, funnily enough, zeph is good at. the number of enemies and acquaintances he's made, both mortal and demigod, along his travels is a testament to that. no matter what, though, he will always stick around and will be more often than not be a quick call away, able to protect her or kill for her at a moment's notice if required.

Zeph never really knew what it was like to be a "normal" child. When he was younger, his mother freelanced as a translator for marine biology researchers at Boston University: she spoke English, French, and Spanish, and it was her hobby to learn how to read Ancient Greek and Latin. Catherine didn't like to talk about Zeph's dad. When Zeph was younger, he'd always asked about his absent father, but Catherine provided vague answers, or changed the topic, that Zeph understood from an early age that he was not to ask about his dad. The reason for this may have been because she had been young and romantic, and Hermes had left her before Zeph had even been born.
[break][break]
From the moment he could walk and talk, people were out to get Zeph, random people in shopping malls and the parks and even once, in the bathroom of a public swimming pool. Catherine knew, of course, exactly what was going on with her son, and in the earlier years, she sacrificed a lot to keep him safe.
[break][break]
Zeph was seven when his mother met Jaymes Barringer. Already having a troublemaker streak in his personality, Zeph rebelled against the whole idea of Catherine's remarriage. But Catherine had found love and she wasn't going to give it up, despite all of Zeph's efforts to the contrary. When things became official, Zeph became unbearable until Catherine's sister stepped in to help look after Zeph. When he was away from the house and the new happy family, Zeph became calmer but his rage had only internalised. He grew to resent Jaymes and his mother and their new daughter, refusing to go home to meet his new little sister.
[break][break]
The few times he had to go visit Avery - forced by his aunt - Zeph unwittingly found himself falling into protector mode. Perhaps it had been because she was small and always bubbly and always just laughed whenever Zeph said or did anything mean. He had tried to make her cry the first couple of times they'd met, but Avery had never really been bothered, and by the fifth time he'd seen her, Zeph decided she'd grown on him. Like mold. There wasn't really any point in fighting against it, he supposed.
[break][break]
Outside his family life, though, things got worse for Zeph. He was thrown out of every single class, suspended every couple of weeks, and refused to do any work for school. He was caught shoplifting and stealing so many times that authority figures debated on whether or not he should be given some therapy or something. On top of that, weird things kept happening to him, strange people kept stalking him, finding out where he lived and figuring out his timetable.
[break][break]
His journey to Camp Half-Blood at fifteen was kick-started when a flock of Harpies attacked him (they were disguised as disapproving old biddies keeping a hawk's eye on their movements within a shopping centre, and following him home). He was helped by a friend named Rusty, who turned out to be a half-blood keeping an eye on him. He got Zeph safely to Long Island when Lamia struck. They were chased by Lamia and were about to crest Half-Blood Hill when Lamia, perhaps in desperation, used all her energy to propel herself at them. Rusty pushed Zeph past Thalia's tree, but was attacked by Lamia just a meter away from the boundary line. Rusty was the first person Zeph brought to the Underworld. Zeph was knocked out for several days afterwards, and remained weak for a couple of weeks. He was, however, claimed by Hermes while he was passed out, bringing Rusty to the Underworld.
[break][break]
Since then, Zeph's resentment for Hermes only grew. Zeph didn't bother to try and find himself friends. He chose to stay year-round at the Camp. The first time Zeph travelled out of Camp grounds to his old home was when he was sixteen, when he set out to collect all of his old belongings, throw out his childhood memorie,s and leave his aunt's house for good.
[break][break]
When he was eighteen, he decided to take a foray into the mortal world to catch up with some of his mortal friends from school. Zeph met them at the nearby mall, hoping for a nice, peaceful lunch to catch up, when a robbery gone wrong at the nearest shop resulted in the death of a mortal man less than two meters from Zeph. Needless to say, he really hated his 'power'. His friends called 911, and he found himself in the hospital for the second time with a couple of days gone from his life, spent recuperating his body. He returned to Camp with renewed hatred in his veins.
[break][break]
He had nowhere to go, nowhere to escape to. And he hated nothing more than the feeling of being trapped. He was in and out of camp after that, roaming around aimlessly and finding some of the more shadier half-bloods that fed his hatred for the gods. Since his arrival at Camp Half-Blood, he had seen his sister only a couple more times, Catherine not wanting him to have his 'influence' around Avery - oh, but guess who came calling when he was twenty-three, crying because Avery turned out to be just like him. By that point in time, there had been no sympathy for anyone else in Zeph's heart, so he only sent his mother a cold smirk as he came to collect his sister.
[break][break]
Avery's arrival at camp signalled something in Zeph that he needed to be away now. He did care for Avery, of course, but... perhaps he didn't want to share living space with his younger sister in case he did infect her with his poison? Even Zeph knew he wasn't good for her in the least. He ended up staying at the Triple G Ranch for two years, before travelling around again for another two years, and has returned to camp occasionally to check on his little sister.
[break][break]
His last visit to Camp Half-Blood was to find the place in ashes - in a panic, he has heard the campers are now headed for another camp across the country. Moving as fast as he can, he needs to find out if his little sister has survived.

[ MASTER THIEF ] - ability to unlock doors and pickpocket things like all the rest of his brothers and sisters. for him, though, it doesn't take much concentration, and he doesn't even have to think about it much. he tries to keep his stealing to the minimum (where he doesn't absolutely need it, and if he can see that he can get into trouble, he doesn't take it), but sometimes the hand just slips. let's just say that his years of experience affords him a good judgement of when and how to steal.
[break][break]
[ SPEED TRAVEL ] - a power that zeph has become very proficient in, although as he's gotten older he doesn't use it as much. he'd much rather travel using normal transport (ie he'd much rather steal a car) than speed travel. if he is pushed to use it, he can and he will, but the greater distance he has to cover, the more energy it uses. and to be honest, zeph is just far too lazy to put in that much effort when he could have an excuse to steal a porsche.
[break][break]
[ SOUL DELIVERER ] - different from his siblings, zeph also has the unfortunate compulsion to deliver the souls of the dead to the gates of the underworld (in l.a.). it's not something he can do by choice, but rather something he has to do whenever someone dies within a few meters of him. it is excruciating, as his soul is forcefully pulled from his body to help with the deceased's journey. whenever this happens, he will be in a coma-like state for a few days - even longer if he has to deliver more than two people at the same time.
