Perching atop the low wall Annalinde thumbed the edge of the letter idly, her thoughts occupied by the mysteriousness of her mother’s words. She did not even need the letter to know what it said having read it so many times she could recite it word for word yet she still did not understand it, why would her mother refuse to come to her? What secret needed to come to light before they would meet or even talk? She flicked her thumb over the edge of the rough, stained paper again quietly as she folded it and let her gaze drift out over the camp once more. The smell of food filled her nostrils and the thrum of life filled her ears yet she did not want to join in for once, breaking her routine in favour of a strange melancholy. Not knowing hurt though she could not name a demigod that had a good relationship with their godly parent, not that she really knew many of them, it seemed to be par for the course. The nature of the beast, as it were.
She offered a tight-lipped smile to one of her fellow Fourth members as they passed, raising her fingers in a half-hearted wave as they said hello but she didn’t move to follow them. Instead she watched as more Legionnaires filtered by in search of a hot meal after a hard morning’s work. She, however, managed to avoid most of the duties given she’d volunteered for the dawn shift at the boundary which occupied her from four in the morning until around noon, a long run on only a few hours sleep. She could feel the grit in her eyes and the yawns which kept bubbling up causing her entire body to go rigid as she stretched out every time, as one such yawn came to an end she saw a demigod staring at her. Annalinde offered the other woman a small smile, biting her lip and they went on with their lives with the other going off to get food and Annie staying where she was. Letter folded and pressed against the ridge of her index fingers by her thumbs wondering if she should eat. Wondering if she would get hungry when she tried to sleep and reaching the conclusion that she just didn’t want to.
She wanted to relax, to wind down and so she lifted the letter for a moment, going to put it away then letting her hand fall upon her lap again, sighing. She grabbed her headphones from the neckline of her blouse and stuffing them into her ears. One click and then her mind filled with music, focusing and letting the tension wash from her shoulders with a smile. Eyes closed.
