A single bead of sweat ran down Hal's face, starting at his brow, sliding around the left side of his eye, and tracing the line of his jaw before falling off at his chin. He'd been practicing for over an hour. Somewhat recently, he'd suffered a serious injury during a training session, keeping him completely out of action for almost five days. He couldn't remember the last time he'd taken such a long break. For the last week or so, he'd been making up for lost time by training privately, furious with himself for taking such a grievous hit in the first place.
He repeated the same sequence he'd been practicing for the last twenty minutes, working against a training dummy. Since the wood and straw legionnaire couldn't actually fight back, he had to mime his defense, which might have looked a little silly to an onlooker, but most of the campers who could fight -the ones worth their salt at least- would understand.
He imitated a double block on his left side with his sword and spear, swinging his right foot into a roundhouse kick. As his shin thudded into the left side of the dummy, Hal kept his sword locked in a bind with the imaginary weapon, holding it in place while his right hand zipped around, slashing with the spear head.
He relaxed and dropped his guard, "Not bad." He said to himself, had it been a real person, his attack would have cut their throat to the bone.
He felt his spear hum in his hand, visibly glowing as it declared its statement inside his head
Someone is watching you.
Hal paused for a moment, before turning to face the newcomer.
